Safety and Security Come First. Visibility Makes Them Possible.

Over the past several months, I have spent time speaking with people responsible for airport operations—the men and women whose first responsibility, every day, is ensuring aircraft, vehicles, equipment, employees, and passengers move safely through an extraordinarily complex environment.

Technology vendors often begin these conversations by talking about visibility.

Real-time location. Asset tracking. Knowing where everything is.

Visibility is important, but airports do not invest in visibility simply to place another dot on a map. They need it because safety and security come first. Efficiency follows closely behind.

And without visibility, none of those outcomes can be managed effectively.

Consider what happens as an aircraft approaches a gate.

Tugs, belt loaders, baggage carts, ground power units, and other ground support equipment must be in their designated waiting positions. The equipment that should be stationary must not be moving into the aircraft safety area. The path to the gate must be clear, and operations personnel need confidence that everything is where it belongs before the aircraft arrives.

That is not merely an equipment-tracking issue.

It is a safety and security requirement.

Knowing the location of a piece of equipment is therefore only the beginning. The more important operational questions are:

Is it in the correct location?

Should it be moving or stationary?

Is it inside or outside its assigned operating zone?

Is it where it needs to be for the aircraft movement taking place right now?

Location becomes valuable when it is understood within the context of the airport’s operation.

Efficiency depends on that same visibility.

When an aircraft arrives, are the correct ground support vehicles staged and ready? Are enough wheelchairs waiting for the passengers who have requested assistance? Are baggage carts, belt loaders, and personnel positioned to begin servicing the aircraft immediately? Is the airport prepared to complete the turnaround safely and on schedule?

An airport may own enough equipment to support its operation, but that does not mean the right equipment is at the right gate when it is needed.

A wheelchair located in another terminal does not help a passenger waiting at the arrival gate. A belt loader sitting on the opposite side of the airport does not support an aircraft that has just pulled into position. An available tug is not truly available if operations cannot locate it or confirm that it is ready for use.

That is the difference between simply owning assets and being operationally prepared.

Airports already have sophisticated systems for monitoring aircraft on runways and taxiways. However, the apron and gate environment presents a different challenge. It is filled with vehicles, equipment, employees, contractors, and constantly changing aircraft movements.

Much of the work of confirming that equipment is properly positioned is still performed through radio calls, visual inspections, and people physically walking the ramp.

Those processes are important, but they provide only a moment-in-time view.

Real-time operational visibility adds another layer of awareness. It allows airport teams to understand not only where equipment is located, but whether it is behaving as expected within the current operation.

This is why I do not see visibility as a separate priority that comes after safety, security, and efficiency.

Visibility is the foundation beneath all three.

You cannot identify a developing safety risk if you cannot see that equipment is moving where it should not be.

You cannot confirm that a protected area is secure if you cannot determine what has entered or remained within it.

You cannot know whether an arriving aircraft will be serviced efficiently if you cannot confirm that the required equipment and resources are staged and ready.

The technology conversation therefore needs to move beyond, “We can show you where your equipment is.”

That describes a feature.

The more important conversation is:

“We can help you confirm that equipment is safely positioned before an aircraft arrives, identify unexpected movement within critical areas, and ensure the right operational resources are ready at the right place and time.”

That describes an outcome.

Those of us who build technology naturally want to talk about capability—accuracy, battery life, connectivity, coverage, and the amount of data a system can produce.

Airport operators think differently, and they should.

Their job is not to operate another technology platform. Their job is to operate a safe, secure, and efficient airport.

Our responsibility as technology providers is to translate what our systems can measure into the operational outcomes those teams are accountable for delivering.

Safety and security come first.

Efficiency comes next.

Visibility makes all of them possible.
