Every conversation about location technology seems to begin with the same question:
Can you show me where the asset is?
We have become very good at answering that first question. GPS provides broad outdoor visibility, while technologies such as Wi-Fi-assisted cellular positioning extend that visibility into complex indoor environments.
But the map is no longer the hardest part.
The harder and more valuable question is:
What should happen next?
Knowing that a wheelchair is sitting in a terminal at 2:14 p.m. is a data point. Knowing that a flight will arrive in 40 minutes and that four additional wheelchairs may be needed at the gate is a decision.
That is the shift I believe the industry is still working toward.
Location data by itself is a status update. Location data connected to flight schedules, maintenance records, passenger movement, staffing patterns and operating conditions begins to show what may happen next—and where attention will be required before someone has to ask.
We are already seeing the early stages of this evolution in the airport sector.

That is where I believe location intelligence is heading: not toward a more visually impressive map, but toward an operating environment in which location, movement, equipment condition and facility events quietly help anticipate what comes next.
People will not spend their time watching every asset or sensor. They will manage the exceptions.
That brings me to the question I am asked most often:
Does this replace people?
No.
The honest reason has less to do with what the technology might eventually be capable of and more to do with the labour market it is entering.
Retirements, hiring challenges and workforce shortages are already reducing the size of many operational teams. Whether organizations want that reduction or not, smaller teams are being asked to monitor the same facilities, manage the same assets and maintain the same level of service.
I recently spoke with a public-sector security team responsible for checking hundreds of building doors across a wide territory. Team members were required to visit those locations in person, one at a time, to confirm that each door was secure.
That team is spending valuable time checking doors that are likely secure instead of being directed immediately to the one door that is open when it should not be.
Without better tools, a small team covering a large territory eventually faces slower response times and gaps in coverage when a real issue occurs.
Give that same team sensors that identify the one door that is open when it should not be—rather than requiring someone to drive past every door to find it—and the team can direct its limited time toward the condition that actually requires attention.
That is the real workforce story.
The workforce may already be shrinking. The role of technology is to prevent operational coverage from shrinking with it.
However, none of this works if the foundational data cannot be trusted.
Before an organization can achieve predictive intelligence or more autonomous decision-making, it must know with confidence which device is reporting, where it is installed, what the information represents, who owns the data and how access is controlled.
That may sound unglamorous compared with discussions about artificial intelligence and autonomy, but it is the prerequisite for both.
